🌍 US Withdraws from UNESCO—Again: A Diplomatic Shift with Global Impact

The United States has officially withdrawn from UNESCO—for the third time in its history. This move isn't just symbolic; it has far-reaching implications for global cooperation in education, science, and culture.

UNESCO, founded in 1945 after World War II, has long been a cornerstone of the United Nations system, with globally recognized programs such as:

The World Heritage Site initiative

The Man and Biosphere Programme

Promotion of scientific research and global education frameworks

However, tensions between the US and UNESCO have persisted for decades. At the heart of the issue lies the organization’s recognition of Palestine as a member state, which the US and Israel have strongly opposed. Citing concerns of anti-Israel bias and alleged anti-Semitic propaganda, the US has repeatedly exited the organization—in 1984, again in 2018, and now once more under renewed political leadership.

While the US did rejoin UNESCO in 2023 under the previous administration, its latest withdrawal will again raise serious questions about:

The stability of global multilateral institutions

The future of UNESCO’s programs, especially due to loss of major US funding

The intersection of geopolitics and international cooperation

This decision also highlights how global diplomacy and alliances are often shaped by deeper ideological and political allegiances. The coming years will reveal how UNESCO adapts to this challenge—and how other nations respond to a shrinking commitment from one of its founding members.
