🌱 The Visionary Who Made Mangroves a Climate Solution, Not Just a Coastal Tree
On July 26, while the nation commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas, another global cause quietly takes the spotlight — World Mangrove Day.
Mangroves, once seen merely as a local coastal resource, are today hailed as climate warriors. This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It was the foresight of M.S. Swaminathan, who, in 1989, introduced the world to the hidden potential of mangroves at a climate conference in Tokyo.
He didn’t just talk about trees — he linked mangroves to:
🔹 Disaster risk reduction
🔹 Climate change mitigation
🔹 Food security solutions
Before this, mangroves were never central to environmental discourse. But Swaminathan’s scientific advocacy proved how:
✔️ They reduce coastal erosion
✔️ They buffer cyclone storm surges and tsunamis
✔️ Their genetic adaptability can inspire drought-resistant crops
Thanks to his work, we saw the birth of:
🌍 International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (1990)
📊 Global Mangrove Database & Information System
🇮🇳 India’s own Center-State Mangrove Conservation Strategy
Today, India’s mangrove cover is steadily increasing — not just in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu but across 10+ coastal states and UTs. This wouldn’t have been possible without Swaminathan’s pioneering link between coastal ecosystems and global climate resilience.
It’s time we remember not just the roots of mangrove trees, but the roots of mangrove science — and the visionary who planted them.
