The Shadows of Bihar: Breaking the Silence on Girl Child Trafficking

Human trafficking is one of the darkest realities of our time — on par with drug and arms trafficking — and deeply rooted in organized crime. An alarming issue persists in Bihar, where thousands of girls are trafficked each year into forced labor, sexual exploitation, and immoral activities, often under the pretext of performing in street orchestras or dance troupes.

The article I read sheds light on how this has evolved into a criminal network:

Vulnerable girls, often from poor rural families in Bihar and neighboring states, are lured or sold by traffickers with false promises of a better life.

These girls are pushed into vulgar performances, and when they resist, they face abuse, assault, and even rape.

A powerful nexus between local mafias, politicians, and corrupt law enforcement enables this cycle to continue unchecked.

What makes it worse is Bihar’s proximity to the Nepal border, which is highly porous — making cross-border trafficking even easier.

Despite having strong laws like the POCSO Act, Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act, and Juvenile Justice Act, enforcement remains weak. Shockingly, even when some girls are rescued, they are often forced back into trafficking by their own families due to poverty or patriarchal mindset.

This is not just a law and order issue — it's a humanitarian crisis and a societal failure. If we want real change, we must:

🔹 Strengthen enforcement at the local level

🔹 Improve surveillance at transit points

🔹 Empower women through education and financial independence

🔹 Support NGOs and civil society that rescue and rehabilitate survivors

It's time we stopped looking away.
