🌍 Strengthening India’s Seismic Resilience: A Wake-Up Call We Can’t Ignore

Just days ago, Delhi experienced mild tremors from a low-intensity earthquake. While the damage was minimal, it served as yet another reminder of the silent threat looming beneath us.

India sits on an active seismic zone, and history has shown us how devastating earthquakes can be—from the Bhuj tragedy to the deadly 2004 tsunami. Today, experts are sounding the alarm again: we are overdue for a high-magnitude earthquake, especially along the Himalayan belt and Indo-Gangetic plains.

The real concern isn’t just the earthquake itself—it’s our unpreparedness. A staggering 80% of buildings in Delhi-NCR are not earthquake-resilient. Despite having seismic building codes and disaster management policies, the enforcement remains weak.

It’s time we prioritized seismic safety:

✅ Strict implementation of BIS seismic codes

✅ Retrofitting old structures with earthquake-resilient features

✅ Training local authorities in disaster preparedness

✅ Educating communities on risk and response

Countries like Japan and Thailand have set global examples through smart engineering and strict regulations. India must lead a national dialogue now—not after disaster strikes.
