Powering the Future: India's Nuclear Ambitions
As India marches toward becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047, the spotlight is now on an often-overlooked solution: nuclear energy.
In this year’s Union Budget, the government announced a bold Nuclear Energy Mission aiming to scale India’s nuclear power capacity from just 8 GW to 100 GW in the coming decades. That’s not just a leap—it’s a statement of intent.
Why nuclear?
Because it’s clean, scalable, and reliable—everything fossil fuels are not. It holds the key to achieving India’s net-zero emissions goal by 2070 and meeting the soaring energy demand of a developing economy.
But there are real challenges:
Uranium shortages
Outdated Atomic Energy Act (1962)
Tough liability laws scaring away foreign investors
A regulatory body lacking independence
To move forward, India must amend laws, invite private sector participation, and adopt small modular reactors (SMRs) for flexible, decentralized power generation.
Let’s not forget our proud legacy—from setting up Asia’s first research reactor in 1956 to resisting the discriminatory NPT, and building a clean non-proliferation record that earned us trust and global partnerships.
The road ahead is tough, but it’s clear:
🔌 Nuclear energy isn’t optional—it’s essential for India’s future.
