🚰 Jal Jeevan Mission: Challenges & Updates on India’s Tap Water Ambition
Launched in 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) aims to provide 55 liters of safe, BIS-standard drinking water per person per day through household taps in every rural home across India.
💧 Key updates you should know:
✅ The target covers 19 crore rural households, but recent assessments show 4 crore additional households need coverage.
✅ The mission will increasingly rely on alternative water sources, including rivers and lakes, as groundwater alone cannot meet the demand sustainably.
✅ In Budget 2025, the government allocated ₹67,000 crore to the mission, but only about ₹22,000 crore has been utilized so far, signaling a need to accelerate implementation and fund usage.
📌 The timeline to meet the mission’s targets has now been extended beyond 2024-25 to ensure every rural household gains access to safe and adequate drinking water, a crucial step towards improved health, gender equity, and rural development.
🚨 Why it matters:
Access to clean water is foundational for reducing disease, improving livelihoods, and empowering rural women and girls who traditionally bear the burden of fetching water.
