📰 Israel Launches Strikes on Syria Amid Violence Against Druze Minority

Israel has conducted targeted airstrikes on Syria’s capital, Damascus, hitting defense and government infrastructure. These strikes were reportedly carried out in response to sectarian violence against the Druze community, a small but historically significant ethnoreligious minority in the Levant.

Following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, radical groups like Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham—now led by Ahmed al-Shara (formerly al-Julani)—have taken control of Syria. Under their rule, minority groups such as the Kurds and Druze have been subjected to brutal attacks, especially in areas like Suwayda, where reports of mass killings have emerged.

The Druze, often described as an offshoot of Shia Islam, are known for their historical loyalty to Israel and even serve within the Israeli Defense Forces. With many Druze concentrated in the Golan Heights—a territory internationally recognized as illegally occupied by Israel—this move adds layers of complexity to the ongoing Syrian conflict.

Israel's justification: protecting the Druze from genocidal violence. But this also raises deeper questions about sovereignty, international law, and regional stability.

A critical development worth reflecting on, especially in the context of Middle Eastern geopolitics, minority rights, and the blurred lines between humanitarian intervention and military action.
