🛑 Is India Ready to Manage Its Battery Waste Crisis?
India’s shift to electric vehicles and clean energy is accelerating—but what about the battery waste we’re leaving behind?
Despite the rollout of the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, a recent parliamentary committee report revealed that no action has been taken against non-compliant battery producers. Over 1,300 producers have registered on the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) portal—but we have no clarity on how many are fulfilling their recycling targets.
With 2.5 million tonnes of battery waste projected between 2020 and 2030, this is not just a regulatory issue—it’s an environmental time bomb.
We urgently need:
✅ A transparent audit mechanism
✅ Annual compliance reports
✅ Enforceable penalties through environmental compensation
✅ Public access to EPR data
If these systems remain only on paper, battery waste could undermine the very sustainability goals we’re working towards.
The future of clean energy depends not only on innovation but also on responsible waste management.
