🩺 Integrating Compassion in Healthcare: Why India Must Prioritize Palliative Care 🌿
In a country racing towards economic and technological milestones, a quiet crisis often goes unnoticed—millions suffering in silence due to lack of palliative care.
Palliative care isn’t about curing—it’s about caring. It's the medical and emotional support extended to patients with life-limiting illnesses like cancer, advanced respiratory diseases, and other chronic conditions. It focuses on pain relief, mental wellness, dignity, and quality of life—especially in a patient’s final stages.
⚠️ The challenge?
Out of the 7–10 million Indians in need, less than 2% currently receive palliative care.
Why the gap?
🔹 Lack of awareness—among both public and professionals
🔹 Inadequate training in medical and nursing curricula
🔹 Poor funding and infrastructure
🔹 Limited inclusion in public healthcare schemes
But here's the opportunity:
✅ India has a large, trainable healthcare workforce
✅ National programs like Ayushman Bharat can integrate palliative care
✅ Partnerships with NGOs and civil society can amplify outreach
✅ Inclusion in MBBS and paramedical curriculums has already begun
As India’s population ages—expected to rise significantly post-2038—this is no longer optional. Investing in palliative care is not just a health policy decision; it’s a moral imperative.
It’s time to integrate compassion into the heart of our healthcare system. Because how we care, when cure is no longer an option, defines us as a society.
