🛑 India Cracks Down on Dumping to Protect Domestic Industry

A crucial move is underway in India’s trade policy—the government is clamping down on dumping and sudden import surges that could threaten our domestic manufacturers.

So, what is dumping?
It’s when a company exports a product to another country at a price lower than what it sells it for in its own market, often to undercut local producers and capture market share unfairly.

Take this example 👇
If a mobile phone sells in China at $100 but is exported to India for just $80, Indian manufacturers struggle to compete. Over time, this disrupts local production and jobs—an unfair trade practice under WTO rules.

The Ministry of Commerce, through the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade), keeps a watchful eye on such practices. And when needed, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) steps in with anti-dumping duties to level the playing field.

Recently, officials uncovered a spike in gold alloy imports—palladium, rhodium, iridium—being misused to bypass high gold import duties. These alloys, allowed duty-free, were being separated for gold content by some jewelers—a clear misuse of trade policy loopholes.

Swift action followed, ensuring our systems are not exploited and Indian industries remain protected.

This shows how vigilance in trade regulation plays a key role in safeguarding economic fairness and industrial growth.
