🌍 Facing the Himalayan Challenge: How India Is Preparing for GLOF Disasters

Did you know that over 7,000 glacial lakes exist in India, many of them vulnerable to sudden outburst floods?

These are called GLOF events – Glacial Lake Outburst Floods – and they are becoming more frequent due to climate change, tectonic activity, and extreme weather in the Indian Himalayan Region.

One recent example is the South Lhonak Lake disaster in Sikkim, where a glacial lake burst led to devastating flash floods along the Teesta River.

What’s being done about it?

India, through the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is:
✅ Mapping and prioritising high-risk glacial lakes
✅ Installing early warning systems using automated weather and water stations
✅ Using high-resolution satellite imagery (like the NISAR satellite) to monitor glacier movements
✅ Engaging local communities for preparedness and monitoring
✅ Promoting controlled water release to reduce risk

But challenges remain — especially with transboundary rivers, difficult terrain, and limited access to many high-altitude lakes.

This makes it clear: the path forward demands both technology and collaboration, especially with neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bhutan, and China.

🌐 GLOFs aren’t just natural events — they are signals. And India is learning to read them before they strike.
