Every woman deserves a safe journey to motherhood — yet India still loses 93 mothers for every 100,000 live births.
While this is an improvement from 103 in 2017–19, it's far from where we need to be. Behind this number lie stories of rural inaccessibility, poor antenatal care, child marriage, anaemia, unsafe abortions, and a lack of reproductive autonomy.
In regions like Kerala, maternal mortality is as low as 20. But in states with weaker healthcare systems, the ratio remains alarmingly high. This reflects deep systemic inequities—not just in healthcare delivery, but in education, gender rights, and socio-economic support.
To truly reduce maternal mortality, we need:
✅ Stronger rural healthcare infrastructure
✅ Greater awareness of antenatal check-ups
✅ Prevention of early marriages and teen pregnancies
✅ Nutritional security for pregnant and lactating mothers
✅ Empowerment of women to make informed reproductive choices
Community health workers—ASHA workers, ANMs, SHGs—have played a vital role in awareness and access. Government schemes like Janani Suraksha Yojana and PMSMA are steps in the right direction, but stronger implementation and wider reach are critical.
Reducing maternal deaths is not just a health goal. It’s a human rights imperative.
Let’s build a system where no woman dies giving life.
