🤖 AI in India: Mission-Driven or Strategy-Led? 🧭
India envisions itself as a global leader in AI. With a tech-savvy workforce and rapid digital adoption, the ambition is strong—but the approach needs a course correction.
Currently, India’s AI efforts are largely embedded within a narrow mission under the Ministry of Electronics & IT. But what we urgently need is a democratically anchored, long-term national strategy—one that places data governance, transparency, and sustainability at its core.
🔍 Why a strategy-first approach matters:
📉 26% of India’s workforce is at risk of job disruption due to AI (IMF)
🔐 Critical sectors like defense, infrastructure & intelligence face security vulnerabilities
⚡ AI systems are energy-intensive—raising concerns over energy and water security in cities like Bengaluru & Hyderabad
🛑 Lack of public debate on ethical, environmental & economic implications
✅ The Way Forward:
Publish a cabinet-approved National AI Strategy
Establish a Parliamentary Standing Committee on AI & Emerging Tech
Conduct a nationwide impact study on AI’s effects across sectors
Ensure rights-based, transparent governance for public data use
India must not merely adopt AI—it must shape its direction through open dialogue, institutional vision, and democratic intent.
Because in the age of intelligence, strategy is the real smart move.
