A Spiritual Succession, A Geopolitical Stand-off

Buddhism, once a shared cultural bridge between India and China, has now become a center of strategic contest. At the heart of this emerging tension lies the question: Who gets to choose the next Dalai Lama?

The Dalai Lama, a revered Tibetan spiritual leader, has announced that his successor will be chosen through the Gaden Phodrang Trust, located in India, and crucially — outside Chinese control. This has triggered a strong response from Beijing, which insists it alone will oversee the reincarnation process.

This isn’t just a spiritual disagreement. It's a geopolitical standoff with deep historical roots. Since the annexation of Tibet in 1950, China has consistently tried to dominate Tibetan Buddhist politics, suppressing dissent and delegitimizing the Dalai Lama’s authority. On the other hand, India has provided refuge, support, and a platform for Tibetan Buddhism to thrive, including a functioning government-in-exile in Dharamshala.

Today, both nations are competing over who controls the narrative of Buddhist diplomacy. India’s Buddhist Circuit initiative aims to promote its spiritual heritage and boost its soft power, while China has made strategic investments, such as in Lumbini, Nepal — the birthplace of Buddha — to gain influence in the same space.

The current conflict isn’t over border lines or ocean routes, but over cultural identity and spiritual legitimacy. With two Dalai Lamas likely to emerge — one appointed by the current Dalai Lama and the other by China — the Tibetan cause may witness even deeper divisions.

India must tread carefully, balancing diplomacy with conviction. Supporting the current Dalai Lama's succession plan isn’t just about faith — it's about preserving cultural truth and asserting rightful leadership in a shifting geopolitical landscape.
